ColdAvenger® Pro Soft Shell High Performance Mask
Finally...the wait is over! Having not received my order for the Psolar.BX Balaclava, I ordered the ColdAvenger Pro and wore it on a 12 km run on this clear, cold morning having a temp of -34 C and a wind-chill of -47 C. To round out my cold-weather head protection I wore a hat and aviator-style winter goggles. The product appears simple in its construction and to be good quality. The wrap around enclosure at the back of the neck and head has a generous Velcro closure that allows the wearer to adjust it to fit comfortably. Everyone’s face is unique in shape and the one-size-fits-all ventilation cup won’t fit everyone the same. Perhaps I have a long face as I felt that the cup wasn’t big enough to cover my nose and chin completely. The adjustable ventilation valve on the inside of the cup makes it inconvenient to access in brutally cold weather. The valve was set to full open for the duration of my run. The ColdAvenger Pro comes with an adhesive foam nose pad that you can attach to the interior of the ventilation cup to cushion the bridge of the nose. Though it felt comfortable with the nose pad, after the run I discovered a small red spot on the bridge of my nose at the point that cup touched it.Despite these shortcomings that others may not experience, I found the ColdAvenger Pro comfortable to wear. It covered my face neck and ears well and kept them insulated from the cold. Talus claims that their product creates a “dynamic balance of warmth and humidity while keeping the face dry”. It did keep my face warm and spared me the embarrassment of slurring my words through numb lips. Keeping in mind that I didn’t attempt to adjust the ventilation or the fit of the mask during my run, the balance seemed to tip in the direction of excess moisture as evidenced by the thick 1.5 inch icicle that formed at the base of the ventilation cup. However, it didn’t seem to impair my breathing or the overall function of the mask. I was disappointed that my goggles fogged quickly; again, I didn’t attempt to make any adjustments to rectify this situation. Perhaps a larger ski goggle or just regular sunglasses would work better. I remind myself that I should stay indoors if I want to feel warm and cozy rather than venture out to run in the brutal cold. Talus accepted a tall challenge to create a functional, effective product that will work for the majority of people engaging in different activities. It’s an effective running mask in the extreme cold and, having scoured the Internet for similar products, I’d say it’s likely the best product available. I will continue to tinker with its fit in the hope of resolving some of the minor concerns I’ve noted. I recommend the ColdAvenger, particularly if running in the extreme cold impairs your performance or is simply uncomfortable.
Hey Team, Just wanted to point out how happy I am with the purchase of the Cold Avenger Pro. At first when I received the product, I was turned off on how simplistic the product was. I thought man I could make this myself. However when I actually got to use this while snowboarding, I was amazed on how it really worked. I was up at the peak of the lift, when high winds started to blow with heavy ice rain. Having full coverage with my goggles on, I was impervious to the elements. Having no fog impeding your vision was a welcome feature. Great product guys.
I got my pro in the mail just before Christmas - 3 days delivery just like they said. I have been skiing with it all season and I love it. The only thing bad about it is that now I don't want to ski without it.
